Canal Vase
zinc . pewter . 1995
A series of vases, originally designed for the florist Christian
Tortu, includes the ‘canal vase’ made from pure zinc
of architectural quality, traditionally used for roofing. The distinctive,
long and narrow ‘canal’ shaped vase played
an important role in a new vision of floral design. Widely imitated
it is now established as a design classic.
Zinc is a noble metal widely used in traditional French architecture
and floral design due to its strength and resistance under exposure
to the elements: earth, air and water.

| Linear floral arrangements rest in place along
the narrow opening of the vase. The matt, grey surface will highlight
the colours and flowers that it holds. It's simple, neutral
appearance can be integrated into a large variety of settings, both
traditional and modern. |

Each vase is hand made,
according to traditional methods. Zinc is notoriously difficult
to work and these pieces demonstrate the skill of traditional French
craftsmanship. Each piece is marked with a ‘Scarabée’ (beetle)
stamp. |
